pre-poo hair

The Wonders of Pre-Pooing!

pre-poo hairWhat is a pre- poo? I know the term might sound weird for new naturals but pre- pooing is simply a pre- shampoo treatment which helps to protect your hair during washing. It isn’t an essential part of every healthy hair regime but it does come in handy especially if you use shampoo to cleanse your coils regularly. Typical pre- poo’s are oils such as olive and coconut, honey mixed with oil,and lightweight conditioners.

To pre- poo saturate your hair with the pre-poo treatment of your choice and let sit for an hour or 15-20 minutes with heat and wash as usual. Choosing to use this treatment will add extra time to your wash day but here are five reasons why it’s absolutely worth it.

Helpful detangler

Apply your pre- poo while detangling your hair. This will make it much easier to remove knots and tangles. The treatment will lubricate your strands making them softer and more elasticized preventing breakage due to detangling.

Easier to wash

Though pre-pooing takes extra time this process really helps to loosen dirt and build up from your hair fibers. This allows the dirt to more easily slide off your tresses, and hopefully result in a shorter wash time.

Protects hair from stripping

After shampooing your hair can feel stripped of all its natural oils, applying a pre- poo treatment can help protect your hair cuticles from losing their moisture. This allows you to get your hair clean without completely stripping it every time you shampoo and reducing the likelihood of breakage while styling.

Replenish moisture

Your natural hair can always benefit from a little extra moisture. Stressors from the elements like heat, humidity, wind and everything in between can leave your hair feeling dry and brittle. Adding a pre- poo treatment into your routine will help to restore moisture to your hair and revitalize your curls.

So Shiny

After pre- pooing, your hair and scalp will definitely be very grateful for the extra dose of moisture and oils. Your coils should also feel soft and look shiny and healthy. Whether you choose to add the treatment to your routine or not is entirely up to you and your hair needs, but a little extra moisture and shine are always welcomed.

tapered twa styling

Tips Before Styling a Tapered TWA

Tapered Twa Shaved Sides

There are many styling options when it comes to a TWA, but the most popular by far is the tapered fro. It’s a fun, cute, stylish cut that freshens up your look. However, this cut has both pros and cons to it. On one hand you get to rock a fly new style but on the other this fly new style comes with regular maintenance beyond your usual regimen.

Here are a few tips to consider that will hopefully help you in your decision process:

Get inspired
There are so many places to go to find pictures of fabulous naturals rocking tapered cuts. Google, Pinterest, Tumblr, and Instagram are some of the best places to get inspired, and doing this will allow you to get a better idea of how you want your cut to look. Long on top, fades, cut super short on the sides and side parts, the possibilities are endless. Here is our pinterest board to get you started:

How short do you want it?

Tapered Twa Hair
Tapered cuts come in many looks and lengths. Some have long coils on top while others are cropped close. It’s a good idea to know what style of tapered cut you’re looking for because it determines what you can do with it. Leaving it long on top will allow you to do twist outs and coil outs to achieve definition while cropping it shorted would mean you would have to use other styling methods like sponge coils or wash and go’s .

See a professional
A good way to make sure you get a great cut the first time is to seek out a professional stylist or barber, especially one that knows how to cut natural hair. If you prefer to cut your own hair go for it and if you mess up you can always go to a professional to fix it.
If you want to keep your tapered cut looking fresh you have to keep up with maintenance. Your hair might grow a lot faster than you think, so you can trim it yourself or go for regular shape up’s at a salon or barber shop. If you’ve been thinking about it, this would also be a good time to consider a different shape for your tapered cut.
Spice it up

Red Tapered Twa
Now that you have committed it’s time to add some fun, and the best way to do this is with some color. It can add that extra pop to your style and really make you stand out. Red, blue, blonde, or pink, there are so many options; it’s really up to you.

big chop

You Just Big Chopped, Now What?

big chopSo you finally went for it! You big chopped and you’re felling all kinds of emotions, happy, free, scared, and excited. But, now what? You have no idea how to take care of your hair! Luckily there are many resources available to help you along your journey. However, trying to absorb all this information can get confusing and overwhelming. Here are some helpful tips to get you started growing healthy curls.

Start simple

There are so many products available on the market now for natural hair that it can be tempting to want to try them all. I know that I can definitely get carried away sometimes. It’s much easier to keep your routine simple and then add products later on as you learn what works best for you. No need to overwhelm yourself with a countless serums and smoothies from the get go.

Leave it alone!

I know you loving your new twa and can’t resist touching it every chance you get, but doing this can cause frizz and could possibly lead to breakage. It is definitely something many new naturals do but there are ways to keep you from overdoing it. One way is by styling your hair, whether is finger coils or flat twists. Because you want to keep your style you will most likely keep your hands out of your hair.

Nourish hair

Keeping your curls moisturized is so important when it comes to keeping your hair healthy and happy. Not properly moisturizing your hair could be why you may have a lot of breakage and a hard time detangling. Use a moisturizing leave- in conditioner with water as a main ingredient and seal it with an oil like coconut or avocado oil. For some this may be enough but if your curls are still feeling dry follow with a thick cream or butter for an added layer of protection.

Stay away from heat

Applying heat to your curls, either through blow drying to flat ironing, unprotected can be a disaster. Without a hair sealant to act as a barrier between your curls and the heat you can cause some irreversible damage that could require you to do a second big chop.

Put the scissors down

There is no rule that says you have to trim your hair every month. You may be chopping off length which could leave you wondering why your hair doesn’t seem to be growing. Only trim your hair to remedy split ends and to eliminate stubborn little knots.

No comparing

The most important thing to remember is to not compare your hair to anyone else’s. Everyone’s journey is their own and the sooner you learn this, the happier you will be with your new curls.

twa feels dry

4 Reasons Why Your TWA Feels Dry

twa feels dryYou finally have your cute TWA, soft springy coils and all. But as time goes on, you settle into your regime and your hair begins to grow and change. Your hair might not feel or behave the same anymore and you can’t quite figure out why. Maybe it’s something you’re not doing or it could be the products you’re using. Here are a few reasons why you might be having trouble keeping your TWA soft.

You Have Product Build Up

Some naturals use only two products to keep their hair soft and healthy while others pile on layers of products to achieve their desired look. No matter how many products you use you can still have product build up. Your scalp becomes dirty and itchy and your curls don’t respond to your usually styling methods anymore. To get rid of build-up, cleanse your hair in sections with an apple cider vinegar rinse, cleansing condition or mud wash. Shampoos with Tea Tree are also good for giving you a nice clean slate.

You’re Not Sealing in Moisture

The best moisturizer for natural hair is water! But it’s not enough to just spritz your hair with water daily to keep your curls soft. You need to seal in the water with an oil such as coconut oil, avocado oil or jojoba oil. For extra protection seal again with a cream or butter, like whipped shea butter.

Your Hair Refuses to Retain Moisture

If you are taking the necessary steps to seal in moisture but your hair still feels dry then you might need to deep condition with a treatment masque or a protein treatment. This will revitalize your strands and make your TWA soft again.

You’re Not Using the Right Products

Are you using sulfate free shampoo? Shampoos often have sulfate as the second ingredient in their products. Sulfate can strip the protein from the hair can cause breakage. Luckily there are many sulfate- free shampoos on the market that cleanse the scalp without leaving your hair feeling completely stripped of all oils. To better protect your strands pre poo with coconut oil to add an extra layer of protection when shampooing your TWA.

5 Ways to Boost Your Confidence in Your TWA

confidence and short natural hair
Source: Authentically B

Going natural is a completely new and exciting experience. For many it can represent new beginnings and a new year. But as the year goes on and you begin to descend from the initial high of this big change your confidence can begin to slowly wither away. To feel excited about your new fro again you need to let yourself get comfortable. Here are five ways you can empower yourself and increase your self confidence in your TWA:

#1 Bringing Sexy Back

Believe in the sexiness that is your newly natural hair! Play with styling and cuts to enhance your new fro. Think of the things you love about your hair; is it frizz free, super shiny, or amazingly springy? Recognize your positive traits and accept the many compliments you are most likely receiving and acknowledge the beauty that is your natural hair.

#2 Educate Yourself

There are many YouTube videos and blogs at your fingertips filled with tutorials, advice and reviews to teach you how to begin caring for your fro. But much of the learning process will be filled with a lot of trial and error. Be gentle with yourself and your coils as you figure out what works best for you.

#3 Connect with other naturals

One of the best things about going natural is that you gain the support of a huge community.  There are hundreds of YouTube channels, blogs and product reviews to help guide you in your natural hair journey. But if you’re seriously considering going back to straightening your hair try attending a meet up in your area for natural hair.  This is not to pressure you into staying natural but to surround yourself with other women who understand how hard it is to transition. A great place to start is

#4 Just go with it

Some days your hair does exactly what you want, other days it has a mind of its own! Going with the flow, especially since your still learning, is essential to the acceptance and love of your natural hair.

#5 No Comparing Your Curls

I know it’s hard watching those videos of experienced naturals with their gorgeous coils and feeling envious or discouraged, but it’s important to remember it’s not a competition.  Everyone’s natural hair journey is different and uniquely their own. Being patient and learning to love your TWA can bring a much needed boost of confidence.
